<시간과 기억(The Seeds)>

통영화우회는 현재에 이르기까지 통영의 역사와 문화를 되짚어보고 통영 내의 작은 공동체를 중심으로 통영의 <시간과 기억>을 제시한다. 통영을 구성해온 어떤 순간인 통영의 곳곳의 모습과 시간에 대해 사유하고 자연에 스민 통영 사람들의 역사와 문화를 회화로 표현하고 관객과 공유하고자 한다. 설치될 작품들은 통영의 시간과 기억을 담아 어떠한 경계를 가지지 않는다.

관객은 더 이상 예술 바깥에 있지 않고 통영의 <시간과 기억> 내부에서 스스로가 통영의 시간을 기억하는 주체가 된다.

- 바람을 타고 흐르는 씨앗-The Seeds

본디 씨앗이라는 것은 곡식이나 채소 따위의 씨, 앞으로 커질 수 있는 근원을 비유적으로 이르는 말로, 씨앗이 바람을 타고 흐르다 어느 곳에 정착하여 생성과 소멸까지 지내는 일생이 마치 인간의 삶과 닮았다. 씨앗이 가지는 생명성은 곧 자연의 순환과 인간의 삶으로 치환한다.

생명의 근원성은 생성과 소멸, 탄생과 죽음 사이에 이미 시간을 내포하고 있다. 우리가 누구인지, 어디에서 왔는지, 왜 여기 있는지 등과 같은 근원을 찾는 것은 씨앗이 타고 온 바람의 곁을 거슬러 시간을 되짚어 보는 것과 같다. 모든 것들이 어떻게 현재와 같은 모습이 되었는지 설명하고자 한다면 그동안 쌓여온 문화와 역사에 대해서 연구해야 한다. 전체는 단순히 부분들의 합으로 설명할 수 없다.

- 시간과 기억

철학자 베르그송에 따르면 생명성은 차이를 낳는 힘인 동시에 기억이기도 하다. 시간이 가지는 연속성 속에 기억이 없으면, 그것은 스쳐 지나가는 찰나일 뿐이다. 흘러가는 찰나 속에서 기억은 켜켜이 쌓이는 시간과 역사로 그 생명력을 확장시킨다. 역사라는 것은 오랜 기간동안 구축되어온 시간들의 집합이다. 역사를 공유한다는 것은 한 사람, 한 사람 사이에 연결된 하나의 공동체의 정체성에 큰 영향을 미친다. 우리는 현재에 이르기까지의 통영의 시간을 기억하고 공유하며 하나의 공동체적 문화를 공유하고 있다. 즉 역사의 기원이자 근원은 시간이며, 공통적으로 향유하는 문화라는 것이다.

Tongyeong Hawoohoe revisits the history and culture of Tongyeong, presenting the city’s <Time and Memory> through the lens of its small communities. By contemplating various moments and scenes that have shaped Tongyeong, the exhibition seeks to express and share the history and culture of Tongyeong’s people—deeply intertwined with nature—through painting. The works on display, imbued with the time and memory of Tongyeong, transcend boundaries and limitations.

Here, the audience is no longer positioned outside of art; instead, within the realm of Tongyeong’s <Time and Memory>, each viewer becomes an active subject, recalling and participating in the collective memory of Tongyeong.

Riding the Wind: The Seeds

A seed, whether of grain or vegetable, is a metaphor for the origin of growth and potential. The journey of a seed, carried by the wind until it settles and lives out its cycle of birth and decay, closely resembles the journey of human life. The vitality of the seed echoes the cycles of nature and human existence.

The origin of life inherently contains time, encompassing creation and extinction, birth and death. The search for our origins—who we are, where we come from, and why we are here—is akin to tracing the wind’s path that carried the seed, retracing time itself. To explain how everything has come to be as it is, we must study the accumulated culture and history. The whole cannot simply be explained as the sum of its parts.

Time and Memory

According to philosopher Henri Bergson, vitality is both the force that generates difference and a form of memory. Without memory, the continuity of time would be nothing more than fleeting moments. Within the flow of these moments, memory accumulates, expanding into time and history, and thereby extending the vitality of life. History is a collective of time built up over long periods. Sharing history profoundly shapes the identity of a community, connecting individuals through shared experiences. By remembering and sharing Tongyeong’s time up to the present, we participate in a communal culture. In other words, the origin and foundation of history is time itself, and the culture we collectively enjoy.
