이철호는 자연의 근원, 그것의 숭고함, 그리고 그것에 기대어 살아가는 인간들이 흔히 보고도 지나칠 수 있는 장면을 관찰하고, 그것에서부터 작업이 시작된다.

그동안 그는 인간과 자연이라는 두 가지의 큰 주제 아래에서 다양한 시도를 통해 사진이 가지는 한계를 극복해왔다. 특히 QR코드를 작품 속 낙관처럼 사용하여 온라인으로의 연결을 작품 속으로 끌어오고, 시각적으로는 작품의 대담한 배치와 여백, 그리고 여백의 옅은 컬러를 통해 확장성을 가지는 것이 특징이다.

이철호가 그동안 작업해온 주요 주제인 ‘자연’은 <초원初元>, <결, 박>, <Line>까지 아우른다. ‘자연’은 이철호가 2020년 발표한 포트폴리오 <초원初元_The First Nature> 이후 반복적으로 등장해온 핵심적인 주제라고 할 수 있다. 이후 <결, 박_The Line on the Grassland>, <Line>을 통해 내용을 확장해왔다.

이번 진주 상평동의 나무88갤러리에서 <The Nature> 전시는 그의 ‘자연’이라는 주제 아래 지속적으로 관찰한 작품을 선보이고 이철호만의 ‘자연’에 대한 관찰의 연장선으로 구현된다. 작가는 자연의 숭고함과 생명력을 우리 인간들이 흔히 보고도 지나칠 수 있는 자연 속 미물-자연의 근원-을 통해 발견한다. 또한 그것에서 인간이 자연에 순응하며 기대어 살아오면서 인간의 발전, 경제의 성장 혹은 개발을 위해 자연의 훼손에 대해서는 눈 감아온 우리의 행태를 목격한다. 작가는 기록으로써의 사진에서 나아가 사진과 현대를 연결하고, QR 코드를 통해 온라인으로 연결되는 지점까지, 특히 각각의 매체가 지닌 장점을 최대한 살려 혼합하는 방식으로 끊임없이 새로운 작업을 만들어낸다. 온라인과 오프라인의 경계를 허무는 새로운 작품은 현대인들이 가장 가깝게 접근할 수 있는 매체, 스마트폰을 통해 QR로써 온·오프라인을 넘나들면서 사진이 가지는 프레임을 확장시킨다. 기존의 시각예술 전시의 전통적 관람형식에서 벗어나 작품을 감상하기 위해서는 QR 코드를 통해 온라인 상에 숨겨진 장치로 연결해 관객에게 프레임을 넘어선 경험과 적극적인 감상을 요구하여 단순히 정적인 감상에 그치지 않도록 한다.

이철호 작가의 작품은 전시되어 있는 전시장의 물리적 공간뿐만 아니라 가상의 공간, 즉 온라인으로의 세계 간의 연결을 경험하게 하고, 작품에 더 많은 장치를 제공함으로서 현실을 인식하게끔 한다. 이번 진주 상평동에 위치한 나무88갤러리에서의 이철호 사진전 <The Nature>에서 자연과 인간 간의 관계, 그리고 물리적 작품과 가상 속 작품 간의 관계를 통해, 감상과 인식의 전환이 되는 새로운 경험을 하는 기회가 되길 바란다.

Lee Chulho: The Nature

Lee Cheolho’s artistic practice begins with close observation of scenes from nature—moments of sublimity and vitality that humans often overlook in their everyday lives. Rooted in the fundamental relationship between humanity and nature, his work seeks to transcend the limitations of traditional photography through innovative approaches.

Throughout his career, Lee has explored the dual themes of humanity and nature, constantly pushing the boundaries of photographic expression. Notably, he incorporates QR codes into his works, using them like a seal or signature, and inviting viewers to connect with the artwork online. His bold compositions, thoughtful use of negative space, and subtle color gradations further expand the visual and conceptual scope of his photographs.

Nature has been a central theme across Lee’s major series, including <Chowon: The First Nature>, <The Line on the Grassland>, and <Line>. Since the release of his 2020 portfolio <Chowon: The First Nature>, nature has remained a recurring and essential subject in his practice. Subsequent series have continued to expand and deepen this exploration.

For his exhibition <The Nature> at Namu88 Gallery in Sangpyeong-dong, Jinju, Lee presents works that extend his ongoing observation of nature. Through his lens, Lee discovers the sublime and vital forces of life in the smallest elements of nature—those often ignored or taken for granted. He also reflects on humanity’s tendency to rely on nature while simultaneously overlooking the consequences of development and environmental destruction.

Moving beyond the traditional role of photography as mere documentation, Lee actively bridges the gap between photography and contemporary digital media. By integrating QR codes, he enables viewers to access hidden online content, breaking down the boundaries between online and offline experiences. This approach encourages more active and immersive engagement, transforming the act of viewing from passive observation to dynamic participation.

Lee Cheolho’s work thus extends beyond the physical space of the gallery, inviting audiences to experience new connections between reality and virtuality. Through <The Nature> at Namu88 Gallery, visitors are offered a unique opportunity to reconsider the relationship between nature and humanity, as well as the interplay between physical and digital art. The exhibition aims to foster a transformative experience—one that shifts perception and deepens awareness.
